State Reconstitutes Digital Migration Taskforce

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) GOVERNMENT has reconstituted the National Taskforce on Digital Migration in a bid to accelerate Zambia's digital migration process.

Information and Broadcasting Services minister Kennedy Sakeni announced the reconstitution of the 11-member committee.

The committee will be led by Zamtel Chief Technical officer Sydney Mupeta, who replaces Mr Luwani Soko.

Other members are acting Director for Planning, Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Information Beaton Kaluba, acting Chief Planner in the same Ministry Boyd Chirwa and Malolela Lusambo who is Director of Engineering at theZambia National Broadcasting Corporation.


Others are Airtel Head of Corporate Communications and Government Relations Jerome Kawesha, Mutale Kaenga who is Managing Director at Casat television, and Patrick Mutimushi Director Technologies and Engineering at the Zambia Information Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA.

The rest are Francis Musonda, Technical Manager at Radio Christian Voice, Philip Chilonga, Planner Ministry of Information and Susan Zulu, public relations officer Ministry of Information.

"Government is confident that in this team, we have assembled the right brains and the right competences to successfully guide the nation in migrating from analogue to digital terrestrial television broadcasting within the stipulated deadlines.

"As a Taskforce, one of your urgent tasks is to update the current roadmap on digital migration with particular emphasis on stakeholder and public sensitisation, consultation and participation in ensuring a people-driven digital migration process," Mr Sakeni said.

The minister said it was his expectation that the reconstituted Taskforce will engage in wide and extensive consultations with the public and other stakeholders in coming up with a policy framework on digital migration.

The International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations agency for information and communication technologies, has set June 17 2015 as the deadline for countries to migrate from analogue to digital terrestrial television broadcasting.

At regional level, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) adopted December 31, 2013, as the deadline for digital migration.
