BRIEF: OSU hospital email system fails; patients' records OK

Feb 23, 2013 (The Columbus Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A 42-hour email system failure that affected 17,000 employees at Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center ended early yesterday morning.

The outage did not affect patients' electronic health records, said Phyllis Teater, the medical center's chief information officer. It was the longest failure the medical center has experienced in recent years, she said.

"It was a sudden thing," Teater said of the outage, which began at noon on Wednesday and ended at 6 a.m. yesterday.

The medical center was still determining the cause but had pinpointed and replaced infrastructure that was causing the problem, she said. Hacking has been ruled out.

The failure caused a significant backlog of email, which was being delivered throughout the day yesterday. Teater could not say how much email had been delayed.

Mobile-device access to the email system still had not been restored as of 3 p.m. yesterday.
