New dialysis clinic opens

Feb 24, 2013 (The Montana Standard - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A new clinic operating in Butte for the past five months provides services for patients in need of kidney dialysis.

Fresenius Medical Care, a state-of-the-art clinic for those suffering from stage-five kidney failure, is located in a 6,600-square foot-facility at 3745 Harrison Ave., Suite D.

Kristin Flo, the regional manager for Fresenius Medical Care, said her company acquired the Butte operation on Oct. 1, 2012, from St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula. The former dialysis unit was located next to St. James Healthcare. Flo said they immediately moved into the new facility on Harrison Avenue.

In Montana, Fresenius also operates clinics in Bozeman and Missoula. The business is headquartered in Waltham, Mass., and has more than 2,100 clinics nationwide.

"We are the largest dialysis company in America," Flo said.

The Butte clinic has eight employees who treat 34 patients over two shifts Monday through Saturday. Dialysis treatment involves removing toxins from the blood and excess water that would naturally be removed by fully functional kidneys. Patients in stage-five kidney failure require regular treatment while they await a kidney transplant.

Patients require treatment three times a week, and each treatment session lasts about four hours. The Butte clinic has 10 treatment stations that surround a central nursing area, where the patients are continuously monitored. Each station has a 32-inch flat screen television and wireless Internet service also is available.

Butte resident Alisha Drakos, who manages the clinic, said she enjoys working at such an advanced clinic.

"I love it," Drakos said. "Everything is state-of-the-art here." The clinic is able to purify and treat in-house the water used in the dialysis treatment. The clinic also has backup equipment and the equipment is routinely inspected. Flo said the clinic is fully self-sustaining.

"It's one of the most advanced you'll find in any dialysis clinic in America," Flo said.

The Butte clinic is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It can be reached by phone by call (406) 494-7027.
