Friends, neighbors mourn man found shot to death in Paso Robles
Feb 23, 2013 (The Tribune (San Luis Obispo - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Update at 5 p.m. Sunday:
In the sunny driveway of a Paso Robles apartment complex on Sunday afternoon, neighbors and friends gathered to chat and mourn the death of a resident who was shot there Saturday evening.
They stood just feet away from a small memorial of votives and roses on the asphalt, marking the spot where he died.
Multiple people at the scene Sunday identified the victim as a single resident of the complex in his upper 30s. A neighbor, who wished to not be identified for fear of being associated with the incident, said that he heard two shots just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday evening. Then he heard a car quickly drive off.
When Paso Robles police responded to the complex in the 3100 block of Spring Street, they found a man in the driveway with a gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neighbors and friends identified the man to The Tribune, but police did not yet officially release his identify. The neighbors and friends described the victim as relaxed and peaceful. "He didn't go looking for trouble," said a woman, whose family was close to the dead man. She declined to be identified, as she spoke through her tears. "He loved kids, and he was always willing to do stuff for everybody," she said. He worked in construction, she added.
Acquaintances said that the killing was a surprise. When asked if they believe that the man was involved with a gang, they said no.
Police declined to comment on the investigation. A motive had not been determined, and there was no description for the suspect or a vehicle.
The police urge persons who have information about the crime and who wish to remain anonymous to call Crime Stoppers' 24-hour hotline at 549-STOP or text "SLOTIPS plus your message" to CRIMES (274637).
