BRIEF: Fairpoint Communications resumes business after Monday oil spill

Feb 27, 2013 (Bangor Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- BANGOR, Maine -- Operations at Fairpoint Communications were back to normal Tuesday after an oil spill forced an evacuation of the Park Street building on Monday morning, according to a state official.

Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Samantha DePoy-Warren confirmed Tuesday afternoon the spill at the Bangor call center has been cleaned up.

An estimated 2,000 gallons of oil spilled in the basement of the building, DePoy-Warren said. The stench of the oil remains throughout the building, but air levels are safe enough for employees to be inside.

"That doesn't mean they're not going to smell something. There will be odors for some time," DePoy-Warren said. "It is safe for workers to be in there." Department of Environmental Protection workers will continue to monitor the air quality in the building, DePoy-Warren said.

"Fairpoint has been communicative and cooperative from the moment this spill was discovered," she said.
