It's playtime for designers chosen to help sell Asda's console games [Derby Evening Telegraph (England)]
(Derby Evening Telegraph (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SUPERMARKET giant Asda has entrusted a small Derbyshire design team to produce point-of-sale material for the latest consoles and games.
The studio at Simon Design, in Cotmanhay, is responsible for the look of packaging and display stands that will be used to attract customers in hundreds of stores across the UK.
The company's design work is being used for the marketing of the new Nintendo 3DS console and games such as Halo and the hugely popular Call of Duty.
Winning the creative work for one of the world's largest retailers has been a boost for the company and helped the six-man team escape the worst of the economic downtur n. Simon Design was started 17 years ago by managing director Simon Davey and moved to its present home from Long Eaton five years ago.
The company has produced branding material for small to medium- sized businesses and large national companies like residential developer Gleeson Homes.
Three years ago, it became an approved supplier to Asda, initially creating design for the packaging of chilled food. That led to a recommendation from the food section to those in charge of games and console marketing at the company's base in Leeds.
Mr Davey said: "With the recession hitting the construction industry hard, we were fortunate to pick up this work for the food and later the games sales from Asda.
"They give us the basic details and leave the rest to our imagination and creativity. "It gives myself and the team a great feeling to know that our work here in Ilkeston is being seen by shoppers in more than 300 leading stores across the country."
Simon Design is now working on a new range of material that will be released into Asda stores over the next few weeks.
"I'm delighted to be working with a big player like Asda," said Simon.
"We hope that as the economy picks up and the games are brought out we will be kept very busy during 2013."
The company's other work includes branding, logo and website design for a wide range clients across the East Midlands. Ian Viles, chief executive of regeneration agency Erewash Partnership, said: "This is another example of enterprise and creativity in Erewash playing its part in the economy, both locally and nationally." oastley@derbytelegraph.co.uk
