Begich Pleased that House Passes Senate's Violence Against Women Act
Bipartisan Effort That Will Save Lives
U.S. Sen. Mark Begich today released the following statement on the House of Representatives final passage of the Senate's version of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The bill will now head to the President's desk to be signed into law:
"I'm glad that individuals on both sides of the aisle and in both houses of Congress came together to get behind this absolutely critical bill. The Violence Against Women Act is more than just a bumper sticker - it's a bill that will help combat violence and domestic abuse in Alaska and across the country. There is simply no higher priority than keeping our families safe and I'm pleased to say that today we took steps to do just that."
Begich was a co-sponsor of VAWA in the Senate, where earlier this month it passed on a bipartisan vote of 78-22.
A member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. Begich plans to reintroduce his Alaska Safe Families and Villages Act in the coming weeks. It will create pilot programs to strengthen Alaska tribal court systems and provide aid to tribes to improve rural public safety, reduce domestic violence, child abuse, crime, and drug and alcohol abuse.
