Former Pinehurst mayor honored for her years of work

PINEHURST, Mar 03, 2013 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Virginia "Ginsey" Fallon has served as an elected official in Pinehurst longer than anyone else, but that's not the only reason the Pinehurst Civic Group honored her last month.

The organization presented Fallon with its Distinguished Service Award on Feb. 19. The group gives the award to a person or group that has provided exceptional public service and made significant contributions to the vibrancy and continued health and welfare of the village.

Fallon served Pinehurst as mayor or councilwoman from 1993 to 2011. She also is a member of the village's water and beautification committees.

Brian Deaton, the group's secretary, presented the award to Fallon. He said her enduring legacy is her work with the Neighborhood Advisory Committee.

Pat Henry, president of the civic group, said Fallon and George Lane, also a former mayor, helped get the committee going. Fallon helped make it strong, he said.

"She got behind George's idea and made it come to life," Henry said.

Fallon said she wanted to make sure the committee, with representatives from various communities in Pinehurst, kept going after Lane died in February 2010.

"I said, 'We're going to continue this. It's a wonderful thing,' " she said.

Fallon said the committee was formed about four years ago to make sure all areas of the village had a voice.

"We felt every part of Pinehurst was just as important as every other part," she said.

Henry said Fallon is an appropriate recipient of the award.

"She's devoted over 20 years of service to the village in various forms," he said.

Fallon said she was honored to receive the award.

"I never felt I was doing anything wonderful," she said. "I enjoyed doing the work." Staff writer Steve DeVane can be reached at devanes@fayobserver.com or 910-486-3572.
