Airtel Kenya cuts call rate in new promotion [Business Daily (Kenya)]

(Business Daily (Kenya) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mobile operator Airtel Kenya has unveiled a temporary lower calling rate as rival telephony firms roll out promotions to capture market share.

Under the promotion dubbed Piga story na 1 bob network customers will make on-net calls at Sh3.6 for the first two minutes and thereafter at one shilling.

"This new rate will give our customers freedom to talk for longer while paying less,'' read a statement from Shivan Bhargava, Airtel Kenya managing director.

The subscribers will dial *555# to use the service. The move by Airtel comes soon after major rival Safaricom launched an almost similar offer called Wika na 2 bob.

The competition for control of the Kenyan market has become so fierce that some service providers have at times offered free on-net calls.

The Indian firm's new offer comes in the midst of another promotion where it is rewarding loyal customers by footing bills, including house rent, electricity, airtime and water. Potential winners must top up Sh50 or more.

Since the promotion began in January this year, over 72 winners have already been awarded a total of Sh5,760,000.

The market is dominated by Safaricom with Airtel coming second. Safaricom has also been rewarding customers through phone sales.
