BRIEF: Romine seeking sheriff's office

Mar 03, 2013 (The News Courier - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- John Romine Sr. wants to be Limestone County's next sheriff because he thinks its time for a change.

The 54-year-old Athens man believes his 25 years of experience at Limestone Correctional Facility, the state prison where he served as both a supervisor and the man who drove and supervised inmates picking up litter, qualify him for the job.


Romine is among four men, all Republicans, who have announced plans to challenge incumbent Sheriff Mike Blakely in the Nov. 4, 2014, general election. The fact that the primary election for this race is more than a year away on June 3, 2014, illustrates the strong interest in the job. Blakely, a Democrat, will have served 32 years as Limestone's sheriff when he completes his current term in 2014 and has had strong support in previous runs.

"I have known Mike (Blakely) for many years, and was a reserve deputy under him years ago," Romine said. "He's done a fine job. I can't say anything bad about him, but ...
