YMCA provided $10.2 million for free, assisted services

Mar 04, 2013 (The Wichita Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Greater Wichita YMCA provided $10.2 million for free or assisted services in 2012, the organization has announced.

The figure is an all-time high, an increase of about $400,000 over the previous year, said Shelly Conrady, the Y's vice president of marketing and communications.

"We're so excited that we've been able to provide all the service we've had" despite the economic downturn of the past four years, Conrady said. "The need has grown so much over the last four years. We can't do it without the community's support." In 2008, the YMCA provided 41,000 people with free services and assisted (discounted or subsidized) services, she said. Last year, the number of people served grew to 70,000.

The beneficiaries include adults and children who are low-income, at-risk and underserved.

About one in four of the agency's funding dollars goes to provide free or assisted services. The giving also comes from donations of labor and money and from grants.

The $10.2 million went to things such as youth sports camps, child care and before-school and after-school programs for 9,500 kids, keeping them safe and involved and helping them with homework, Conrady said.

The programs provide sports, music and arts activities that have been cut from schools, she said.

Another program teaches about 1,900 low-income second-graders to swim.

A summer camp and child care program serves 2,500 children ages 6 weeks through 16.
