Salida Union to weigh election shift
SALIDA, Mar 04, 2013 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
At a special meeting Tuesday, Salida Union School District board members will vote on extending their terms by a year to lower election costs and accommodate a switch to voting by trustee areas.
The change would postpone voting on three board slots scheduled for this year, seats held by Ivan Wyeth II, Virginia Berry and Catie Englebright.
The resolution says the turnout is greater and the per-voter cost lower during statewide general elections. It also says the district needs time to consider 2010 census counts in dividing into trustee areas.
It would be the first district in Stanislaus County to leave the odd-year election cycle.
Trustees also will consider leasing a closed elementary campus to the Stanislaus County Office of Education on a five-year, $250,000 contract.
The county office hopes to house special programs at Mildred Perkins School in north Modesto, including its YES Company youth theater troupe. The Perkins multipurpose room, large enough to stake out Gallo Center stage marks, was an advantage of the site, said Scott Kuykendall, SCOE director of alternative education.
The campus already has special-education and Head Start classes overseen by the county office.
Terms of the lease say the county office would pay no less than $50,000 a year, plus a prorated amount to take over the site this spring. The yearly amount could rise if there were high student attendance at the facility.
The Salida Union School District board will meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the district office's Yosemite Room, 4801 Sisk Road, Salida. To see the full agenda, visit http://bit.ly/SalidaAgenda.
