BRIEF: Stop & Shop reaches tentative deal with workers

Mar 04, 2013 (Boston Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A tentative new contract agreement has been reached for some 40,000 union workers and Stop & Shop.

The presidents of five United Food and Commercial Workers International Union locals announced this morning that the tentative pact, reached around 4 a.m., is now subject to legal review. Union officials will then set up ratification meetings with members.

The union workers' contract originally was scheduled to expire at midnight on Feb. 23, but it was extended to midnight last night as negotiations with the Quincy-based supermarket chain continued.

Negotiations apparently got contentious over the weekend, according to an update posted on the union's website just after midnight last night.

"Stress is very high, and emotions are playing a greater role as the exchanges of proposals creates more questions than solutions," the presidents said in an update. "We are quite a bit apart on wages, and we are significantly apart on a multitude of heath-care issues, especially surrounding how the law requires part-time employees who are working 30 or more hours during a 12-month look-back period be provided coverage." ___ (c)2013 the Boston Herald Visit the Boston Herald at www.bostonherald.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
