BLUNDER-PRICED ; Fury as firm refuses to sell 3D TVs it accidentally offered at just EUR 6.49 [Eire Region] [Mirror (UK)]
(Mirror (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CONSUMERS were left fuming yesterday after an online retailer refused to part with 3D TVs advertised for just EUR 6.49.
Hundreds of customers snapped up what they thought was the bargain of a lifetime but the company involved said it was all a terrible mistake.
Viking Direct claimed they had accidentally priced their 51 inch 3D television for EUR 6.49 instead of EUR 649.
Consumers couldn't believe their luck when the sets were being offered online on Saturday and Sunday.
When the company spotted the error it shut down the buying function but by then hundreds of orders had been placed.
Some customers had ordered dozens of the top-of-the-range sets hoping to make a killing and one man tried to buy 162 of them.
Yesterday, Joe Duffy's Liveline on RTE Radio One, was inundated with complaints from listeners who believed they had bagged a massive bargain.
Lorna Holderied demanded Viking donate the TVs to charity.
She wrote on her Facebook page: "I think you should donate some televisions for charity in Ireland.
"I have been on the Joe Duffy Show as we bought 10 for charity. Under our law you must prove that you as a company did not do this as a free advertising scheme and if you can't then you must honour. I will never shop with you again."
Emmett Buckley added: "The description said it was an affordable Samsung, so how were we supposed to know it was a mistake on the price. It was very affordable."
Jonny Cosgrove said: "Was really hoping Viking Direct were building their TV offer last night into their spring marketing. A mistake is a mistake but I'm still waiting to hear from them."
But the company refused to budge and released a statement yesterday claiming it could not deliver the EUR 6.49 TV sets.
It stated: "As per Viking's terms and conditions, the company is entitled to cancel any order if the ordering web pages contain any error, including in relation to the description or price of any goods.
"We are in the process of contacting customers who placed an order to advise them of the misprice and their impending refund.
"We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience this has caused."
News of the "bargain" spread like wildfire over the weekend and was shared on Twitter.
