Board behavior tops BISD agenda
Mar 05, 2013 (The Brownsville Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Board behavior is at the top of the agenda for this afternoon's Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees meeting.
Board President Enrique Escobedo placed two items on the agenda. The first calls for "discussion, consideration and possible action" to reorganize the board's officers. The second recommends approval to adopt board policies BED(LOCAL), BE(LOCAL) and BDB(LOCAL) as revised.
"My intention is to improve board decorum and bring back the professionalism that this board deserves," Escobedo said. "We're leaders, we're mentors and therefore we should act as such. I respect each every board member. However, I believe we do have room for improvement."
Escobedo referred to heated discussions at recent meetings and said it is unlikely those exchanges "changed anyone's mind" because board members usually review items before the meeting and know how they're going to vote.
"Everything I'm proposing is right in line with 'Roberts Rules of Order,'" he said. "If we argue and we fight, we build up ill feelings and none of that is healthy for our board."
He said reconsidering the board's officers is a necessary "to make sure every board member has the confidence of every other board member."
The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the board room of the BISD Administration Building at 1900 Price Road.
