BRIEF: East Carolina to name new athletic director

East Carolina University has scheduled a 4 p.m. press conference to introduce Jeff Compher as its new director of athletics.
Compher is the former vice president and director of athletics at Northern Illinois University. He'll replace Terry Holland, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Compher's hiring is subject to the approval of the ECU Board of Trustees.
A graduate of James Madison University, Compher, 53, played football for the Dukes. He received his Master's degree from Shippensburg State University and his held his first position in college administration at N.C. State University. Compher served as assistant director of housing and residence life from 1982-86 for N.C. State.
Compher has served the last five years as athletic director at Northern Illinois, where the football program won two straight Mid-American Conference titles. His football coach last year at Northern, Dave Doeren, was recently hired to direct the program at N.C. State.
