BRIEF: The Desk: Some ways to celebrate National Consumer Protection Week

Mar 06, 2013 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Oregon Department of Justice is celebrating National Consumer Protection Week with the U.S. Postal Service by providing information today on how to avoid mail scams.

The event, held through 6 p.m. today in the lobby of the Portland Main Post Office, 715 NW Hoyt St., offers information on sweepstakes and other frauds perpetrated via the mail, phones and online.

The state agency also will distribute its new brochure, "Top Ten Consumer Tips to Protect You and Your Family," which also can be found online.

The state also has a Twitter account, where it will alert consumers of scams and consumer events. Get a call, mail or online inquiry you think is suspect Tweet it at @OregonScamAlert and, as always, the Oregonian's consumer column, @TheDeskOnline.

In other consumer news, the Better Business Bureau announced an upcoming event to shred documents and dispose of old cell phones securely. In Oregon, the event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at Landmark Ford, 12000 SW 66th Ave., Tigard.

And, while you're doing all this work to protect yourself, check out this comprehensive list of national consumer web sites and resources.
