Minnesota Twins: Kyle Gibson tosses three wild pitches in one inning (w/video)
Mar 08, 2013 (Pioneer Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Three wild pitches in one inning usually aren't an indication of a pitcher on top of his game.
For Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson, it was another reminder his fastball doesn't always obey the way it should. And it meant extra work for catcher Chris Hermann, who had to keep chasing down baseballs that missed their intended target by several feet in the second inning.
"Just bad pitches," Gibson said Thursday, March 7, after facing the Philadelphia Phillies. "I wasn't really making it easy on him. I wasn't crossing him up on a pitch; I was crossing him up on location. If it's a two-seamer that cuts, he doesn't have much of a chance."
Manager Ron Gardenhire wasn't that bothered by Gibson's outing, noting there was a double-play grounder that took a wicked hop past shortstop Pedro Florimon during a four-run second inning.
Gibson, who twice retired red-hot Phillies slugger Ryan Howard (strikeout and groundout), said his offspeed pitches were better than they had been in some time. Still, he saw his spring earned-run average spike from 2.45 to 10.50 after being charged with six earned runs on eight hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings.
Strongly in the mix for a spot at the back of the Twins' revamped rotation, Gibson said he's past the point of thinking about the health of his surgically repaired elbow.
Now it's about winning a big-league job.
"Competition is good for everybody involved," he said. "Anybody's that's competing for a
job, that's going to make you work even harder. I'm kind of over the part of staying healthy. Now it's time to go out there and actually compete and be successful and win a job."
Twins right-hander Tim Wood bounced back from a nightmare outing Tuesday by striking out the side in the ninth. ... Eduardo Escobar had three hits in a 12-5 loss to the Red Sox in the home half of the Twins' split-squad day. ... Kevin Correia, making his first start in eight days, allowed six hits and two earned runs and made an errant pickoff throw while recording just seven outs.
