Bradford County provides update on GPS Residents wonder when their devices will work properly [The Daily Review, Towanda, Pa.]

Scott Molnar, an employee of the Bradford County Office of Community Planning & Grants, addressed the issue at the Bradford County commissioners' meeting on Thursday.
Residents who have GPS devices in their cars have been contacting the Bradford County commissioners' office to find out when they those devices will be working properly in Bradford County, he said.
A few years ago, the county did a 911-readdressing project which converted all rural route addresses in the county to city-style addresses, Molnar said.
However, motorists cannot use their GPS devices to find most of the homes that used to have rural route addresses, he said.
Molnar said it has been 10 months since he forwarded the data needed to make the GPS devices work to a series of data clearinghouses. The clearinghouses are then supposed to provide the data to manufacturers of GPS devices.
However, the priority in the GPS industry has been to bring GPS to urban areas first, Molnar said, explaining the delay.
Molnar said he will be in contact with the clearinghouses to try to get the delay addressed.
The lack of GPS also affects emergency responders, Molnar said in an interview.
GPS devices help ambulance workers and firefighters locate the scene of an emergency, he said.
While emergency responders can get directions to an emergency from a 911 dispatcher, a GPS device "gives them an additional layer of knowledge" to help them find the emergency site, he said.
