BRIEF: New baggage carousel being installed at airport
Mar 09, 2013 (American News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Early next week, travelers will no longer have to claim their baggage outdoors at Aberdeen Regional Airport.
Workers have been installing a new, larger baggage carousel at the airport this week.
"Monday or Tuesday, we're hoping to have it up and going," said airport maintenance foreman Bob King.
King believes that passengers will like the new carousel because it provides accessibility on two sides, rather than one. The size of the baggage claim room has also been expanded as part of the airport's terminal remodeling.
The completion will bring an end to the luggage merry-go-round. The remodeling forced the baggage claim area outdoors for most of the last five months. The claim area had returned indoors, but had to go back outdoors after the carousel installation crew arrived Monday, he said.
Parts of the old carousel have been saved and reused, King said.
Once the baggage claim area is done, the indoor portion of the terminal remodeling will be largely done. The remaining outside work will have to wait until the frost is out of the ground. That job involves asphalt and concrete work where the building was expanded, King said.
