TRA: No Dominance of any Licensed Corporation on International Telecommunications Services Sector [Bahrain News Agency]
(Bahrain News Agency Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Manama, March 9th (BNA) – Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) Bahrain issued its final decision with respect to the review conducted by the development of competition in the sector of international telecommunication services in bulk, and resulted that Batelco is not dominant in the markets of international telecommunication services sector in bulk, and there is no domination of any another corporation in these markets.
The results of this review is an important step to ensure enforcing the regulatory procedures on the markets that have dominance or an effective market powers. Therefore, Batelco is not committed to provide international telecommunications services in bulk according to regulatory conditions. This decision is the first of its kind, which stipulates that Batelco is not dominant in the international telecommunications market in bulk, where it enjoyed such privilege before.
The authority has also taken into consideration the replies received from the officials involved in the draft, which was issued for public consultation in 2012.
Commenting on the subject of the review conducted by the authority, Director General of the (TCA) Mohammed Hamad Bubshait stated "This decision is very important as it leads to the removal of regulatory obligations in the bulk market, where competition has started. In addition, there is a number of varied options concerning the sources of international capacity inside and outside Bahrain, and it is very important to ensure the harmonization of the regulatory framework in Bahrain to reflect these recent competitive developments."
