BRIEF: Computer server crashes, delaying firearm background checks and purchases in Oregon
Mar 08, 2013 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Got gun
You might not be able to get one today, state police officials say, because a computer server that processes internet and telephone background checks for firearms purchases is down.
Lt. Gregg Hastings, a spokesman for the Oregon State Police, said the Firearms Instant Check System, or FICS server went down Friday afternoon and is causing delays.
According to their website, the Firearms Unit provides a "service to all federally licensed firearms dealers in the state of Oregon by conducting the Firearms Instant Check backgrounds on persons attempting to purchase a firearm (ORS 166.412). Records of the transactions are kept for five years."
The data base, which is exempt from public inspection, gets its funding from a $10 user fee for each transaction, and is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. "every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas."
"We understand how frustrating this unexpected disruption is for those who rely on the service," Hastings said.
In addition, the firearms unit checks a list of stolen guns against local and national lists of stolen firearms to gun dealers and the public.
