North Side resident robbed, found dead
Mar 10, 2013 (The Columbus Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Columbus police suspect burglary was the motive in the fatal shooting of a North Side man found dead in his bed yesterday.
Detective Andrew Mitchell said that Robert Daley, 52, was found about 3:30 p.m. by his wife and two of his three children in his apartment at 6315 Sunderland Dr., north of Rt. 161 and east of I-71.
The detective said Daley had been shot once in the head. Police did not know when he was shot. An autopsy had not been done as of last night.
Mitchell said Daley had moved to Columbus for work about a year ago from Mansfield, where his family still lives.
Among the items stolen from the apartment were a shotgun, a handgun, a television, a video-game system and a cellphone. Mitchell said Daley legally owned the guns.
Daley's car also was stolen. Police were searching for the gray 2009 Toyota Camry with license plate FRA6017.
Police said Daley was Jamaican and worked as a manger at a nearby KFC. Several neighbors who gathered to watch the police activity said Daley seemed friendly, and they were unsettled to see police crime-scene tape on their street.
"That's scary, and it's really close to home," said Lori Colbridge, 49, who has lived in a nearby apartment for about one year. She said the killing prompted her to keep her 4-year-old grandson indoors.
She said she moved to the neighborhood because she thought it would be safe.
Christopher Bell, 45, who lives in the same apartment as Colbridge, said he suspected that the killing was a random act and it doesn't make him feel unsafe.
"This is the first thing that's ever happened like this. I've never seen no fights or anything," he said.
But Clyde Roush, 50, said he's lived in the neighborhood for 20 years but is ready to move because of increased violence and gangs nearby.
"It's changed," he said. "It's getting worse and worse and worse."
