Saudi Arabia approves firing squads as execution option
Riyadh, Mar 10, 2013 (EFE via COMTEX) --
Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry has authorized execution by firing squad as an alternative when beheadings with sabers are difficult to carry out, the Al Yom newspaper reported Sunday.
The ministry has authorized provincial governors to use firing squads amid a shortage of executioners skilled in using sabers, the newspaper said, citing a statement released by the government.
Executions have been delayed in some cases due to shortages of men trained to behead the condemned with sabers.
Beheading is the most common form of execution in Saudi Arabia, while firing squads exist but are not commonly used.
Authorities executed 76 people last year for murder, armed robbery and drug trafficking, the Interior Ministry said. EFE
