New Jersey man arraigned on charges of exploiting Cape teen
BOSTON, Mar 11, 2013 (Cape Cod Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A New Jersey man was arraigned Monday in U.S. District Court on charges that he sexually exploited a Cape Cod teenager.
Anthony Scarano, 51, of Sayreville, N.J., was charged Feb. 26 with one count of sexual exploitation of a child -- specifically through production of child pornography -- but made his initial court appearance Monday.
Scarano is accused of exchanging dozens of sexually explicit photos and videos with a teenage girl from Cape Cod whom he met in October 2011 on the website motherless.com, according to court documents.
The case was brought to local police in November 2012 when the victim's foster mother and social worker discovered the images on the girl's iPhone, according to court documents.
The phone was turned over to the Cape Cod Computer Crime Unit, which found more images and contacted the U.S. Postal Inspector Service for assistance.
In an interview with investigators, the victim said she had met Scarano in a chatroom in October 2011 and the two communicated by email for the next several months. Scarano claimed he was 32 years old and she said she was 15. They discussed the victim's boyfriend problems and Scarano's crumbling marriage, according to court documents.
In the spring or summer of 2012, the victim sent her first photo to Scarano at his request.
The two began communicating daily via text message, email and video messaging and discussed meeting before the foster mother discovered the images, according to court documents.
Federal investigators continued interacting with Scarano with the victim's cellphone and invented a 14-year-old cousin for the victim who also exchanged sexually explicit messages with him, according to court documents.
On Feb. 25, federal and local law enforcement executed a search warrant at Scarano's New Jersey home and interviewed him about his relationship with the victim. Scarano admitted to exchanging sexually explicit material with a girl he knew was underage but said he couldn't stop because he was "infatuated," according to court documents.
Scarano also admitted to a physical encounter with another 15-year-old girl at a movie theater in New York and inappropriate communication with the teenage daughter of a close friend, according to court documents.
After the hearing Monday, Scarano was returned to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and is due back in court March 22 for a probable cause hearing, according to court documents.
