Food Matters: Video game maker launches 'The Beer Diaries,' plus a corned beef recipe from Fado [Austin American-Statesman]

'The Beer Diaries' is another hit from videogame developer Zeschuk
When video game developer Greg Zeschuk left BioWare late last year, he was ready to do something less stressful than putting out a high-profile game like "Star Wars: The Old Republic."
"After departing from BioWare I wanted to pursue something that I was passionate about, as well as being involved in a much smaller venture than building a gigantic videogame," he recently said in a Q&A on beer writer Emma Janzen's blog, Liquid Austin. "I had a very rough idea of what I wanted to pursue, something involving sharing the experience around craft beer, but I didn't have a specific format or goal in mind." Then he met Mike Mann, a local documentary director who was working on a film about Texas beer laws at the time.
They saw a transformation in the Austin beer scene taking place and wanted to use their skills to help raise awareness of the craft beer industry and the people behind it. "The Beer Diaries" launched in January, and Mann and Zeschuk have already released six half-hour episodes, which you can watch at thebeerdiaries.tv. (They hosted several screenings of new episodes at the Alamo Drafthouse, often to sold-out audiences who were enjoying some of the beer featured in the show.)
Zeschuk says they have already finished about 15 episodes covering breweries and brewpubs in Austin, including one later this month with Aaron Franklin of Franklin BBQ, and later this year, they'll take the show up to Colorado.
"Our goal is to have literally every brewery in town with an episode," he said. "Interestingly, in Austin this is a bit of a moving target because there are more opening all the time."
