FCC Approves T-Mobile, MetroPCS Transaction
(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, March 12 -- The Rural Cellular Association issued the following news release:
Today, the Wireless Telecommunications and International Bureaus of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission) approved the merger of T-Mobile and MetroPCS by concluding that the transaction serves the public interest. Like many other competitive carriers, T-Mobile and MetroPCS are in need of additional spectrum, and the approved transaction will result in a stronger competitor to the benefit of consumers.
In a statement, CCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry said, "I am pleased the FCC recognizes the industry needs stronger competitors and, like Commissioner Rosenworcel, am hopeful this transaction will bring more competition to the market. This merger acknowledges that all competitive carriers need access to spectrum, and the FCC should take this into strong consideration as it completes the Mobile Spectrum Holdings proceeding and establishes the incentive auction rules."
Berry continued, "The longer the wireless industry continues to be dominated by a duopoly, the harder it will become for competitive carriers to get access to spectrum, devices, other networks, and virtually every other input needed to run their businesses. T-Mobile has been willing to work with smaller carriers, and I am confident that it will continue to do so now with its increased resources. I believe there will be good synergies resulting from the approved transaction. The FCC should see that now, more than ever, competitive carriers need the opportunity to access additional spectrum, a wireless ecosystem that encourages access to devices, and roaming partners to ensure consumer choice in the marketplace."
