Panther Paws return nat'l champs

After a weekend of little sleep and a lot of dancing, the Permian High School Panther Paws return to Odessa as national champions.
At the Crowd Pleasers National Showcase of Champions in San Marcos on Saturday, the teen dance team came out on top and had to make extra room in the car for new trophies.
"I'm so extremely proud of (them). The coolest thing at the competition is when the other teams are congratulating you and telling you how great you did," Kristin Carter said, the PHS dancer director and seven-year Panther Paws head coach.
The weekend was grueling. Proof positive: Her group of varsity officers danced in 10 routines on Saturday.
"I was up at 4 a.m., they were up at 5 a.m. and we didn't go to bed until 2 a.m. It's very intense," she said. "That's what some people don't understand. Every hour we're competing in something."
Carter was particularly happy about the "Crowd Pleasers" award the team received for a hip hop routine, along with a team production award for a dance about bullying that they perform at PHS pep rallies.
"It made a huge statement. It was literally an amazing day ... Every single one did the best job they've ever done. They represented Permian so well, with respect, dignity and class," Carter said.
Titles the PHS Panther Paws won:
Junior Varsity
--National champions in team jazz, team lyrical, and team hip-hop
--Overall national champions in junior varsity division
--Superior Circle award
Officers
--National champions officer jazz, lyrical, hip-hop and contemporary
--Overall national champions in medium officer division
--Choreography award for contemporary
Varsity
--National champions team pom, team contemporary and team production
--First runner-up overall in the medium division
--Elite Circle award (score of a 95 or higher in three or more divisions)
--Crowd Pleaser award for hip-hop
--Choreography award for contemporary
