Three-state chase leads to Missouri arrest for Memphis robbery suspects

Mar 14, 2013 (The Commercial Appeal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Two robbery suspects who fled a T-Mobile store at 8385 Stage Road led police and state troopers on a three-state chase Wednesday before their arrest by Missouri state troopers on Interstate 55 about five miles north of the Arkansas-Missouri border.

Missouri trooper Clark Parrott said Missouri was notified just before 3 p.m. that the armed suspects were in the Blytheville, Ark., area and headed north. Troopers then set up at the state line, laying a spike strip on the highway in hopes of disabling their car as they crossed into Missouri, he said.

Parrott said the fugitive driver swerved to miss the spike strip and almost hit a trooper before the car was stopped about five miles inside Missouri.

The trooper said he was awaiting further details, including reviews of dash-cam videos as the fugitives crossed the state line. The review would consider whether the driver of the getaway car intentionally attempted to injure a trooper as he maneuvered to miss the spike strip.

Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said the store was robbed of several phones by two male suspects who escaped in a black Chevrolet Impala with Illinois tags. She said Memphis officers tried to stop the car at the Watkins exit as it headed west on I-40, "but the suspects refused to stop." Memphis police followed the getaway car until it crossed into Arkansas.

Parrott in Missouri said he did not know the identities of the two suspects. He said a handgun was recovered during the arrest.

Arkansas state police referred any inquiries about the chase across Arkansas to arresting officers in Missouri. A T-Mobile spokesman provided no details of the robbery, but issued a statement saying the company "is pleased to say that no one was injured. We would also like to thank law enforcement for their quick action . . ." ___ (c)2013 The Commercial Appeal (Memphis, Tenn.)
