IU proposed budget available for inspection Copy available at Canton office

Bradford County residents wanting to examine the proposed general operations budget for BLaST Intermediate Unit 17 don't have to travel too far.
Though the Intermediate Unit covers school districts in Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan and Tioga counties, it has an office located at the intersection of routes 14 and 414, across from the Pump n Pantry, just south of Canton Borough.
According to a legal notice, the 2013-2014 proposed spending plan is available for inspection in the BLaST office, which has an address of 33 Springbrook Dr., Canton. There is also an office at 2400 Reach Rd., Williamsport.
Anyone can stop in and examine the budget at the offices, according to John E. Brenchley, director of management services for the intermediate unit.
Still, Brenchley said he can't recall anyone ever doing that.
"No one has asked for a copy at our office," he said, adding that the board members in the school districts in the Intermediate Unit vote on it. The Intermediate Unit board members vote on it twice.
In addition, superintendents and business managers in the various school districts review it; they all receive copies of the proposed spending plan, which is available at the school board meetings in the school districts.
According to Brenchley, this year's Intermediate Unit proposed budget is $2,260,561.
Here's a partial breakdown: technology, $750,000; business office, $410,000; office of executive director, secretary, board, and staff, $275,000; curriculum services for school districts, $180,000; and budgetary reserve/capital transfer, $350,000.
There is no assessment to any of the school districts.
Rather, the Intermediate Unit charges the districts a fee for the services it provides. In addition, the Intermediate Unit sells products, such as software to the school districts.
The school districts will vote on the proposed budget before May 1.
