Wire theft nets eight years
MCLEANSBORO, Mar 20, 2013 (McLeansboro Times-Leader - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Two local people were sentenced -- one to prison -- in connection with the theft of 2,000 feet of copper wire last month.
Meanwhile, a third person awaits a court hearing in the case.
Edward G. Keller, 46, of the 300 block of West Carpenter Street, was sentenced March 14 in Hamilton County Circuit Court to serve eight years with the Illinois Department of Corrections. He pleaded guilty to theft, a Class 3 felony, court records stated.
A second person, Bobbie J. Barmes, 31, also of the 300 block of West Carpenter Street, pleaded guilty to an amended misdemeanor charge of theft.
Judge Barry Vaughan sentenced her to 24 months' court supervision and fined her $350 plus court costs.
Keller, Barmes and Daniel E. Kirsch, 19, of Route 1, McLeansboro, were arrested earlier this month and charged with the Feb. 19 theft of the copper wire from a downtown location here.
The three went to 104 N. Jackson St. and took the wire cable from behind the True Value Hardware store, State's Attorney Justin Hood said in a court document. The wire belonged to Frontier Communications, Hood said.
A technician told McLeansboro police that the cable wire disappeared Feb. 19. Police later interviewed Keller, Kirsch and Barmes, who admitted to their involvement in the theft of the cable wire, Hood said.
Vaughan also ordered Barmes to pay restitution to Frontier Telephone of McLeansboro; she and Kirsch are each to pay half of $1,100 restitution to Frontier, court records indicated.
Kirsch is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in the case at 10:30 a.m. today (Thursday).
At a court appearance March 7, Kirsch waived counsel and elected to represent himself.
As of Monday, he was still in custody in White County Jail in Carmi on $10,000 bond.
