Bridgeton hit-and-run ruled accidental
Mar 22, 2013 (The Press of Atlantic City - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
BRIDGETON- The death of a 54-year-old Delaware woman remained a mystery for at least 24 hours as police investigated the incident, finally ruling Friday that it was an accident.
Bernadette Montgomery was found dead, partially on the roadside and partially on the curb Wednesday evening appeared to have fallen under the rear bus tires of an NJ Transit bus she had just disembarked, police said.
Capt. Michael Gaimari said evidence from the scene, paired with "video surveillance from several businesses, statements taken from witnesses and preliminary autopsy findings it appears the victim fell shortly after exiting the NJ Transit Route 410 bus (and the bus's) passenger side rear tires then ran over the victim."
Giamari added the driver was located in his bus parked in the Hancock Center parking lot on Rt. 49 shortly after the incident.
The bus driver's identity is being protected, but police say he may not have realized what had occurred.
The autopsy was conducted Friday morning at Shore Medical Center in Somers Point to determine why police found the woman dead at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The crash will be investigated further by the Bridgeton police and Cumberland County Prosecutor's office. Any information can be given to the police department at (856) 451-0033.
