GREENSBORO -- A resident of Autumn Ridge Apartments was asleep in her apartment Thursday morning when she was startled awake by a gunshot in the hallway.
The woman said a few seconds later she heard a second gunshot, then voices.
The resident said she was too scared to open the door, so she called 911.
Police received a 911 call at 12:47 a.m., which reported shots fired at the Autumn Ridge Apartments on Wind Road.
A man was found in the hallway of the 221 building of the complex.
The resident who called 911 said she went out to talk to police when she heard them in the hallway. She saw the victim lying on the ground.
"He was gasping for breath," she said. "There was blood everywhere." The man was taken to Moses Cone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
He has still not been identified, said police spokeswoman Susan Danielsen.
There are no suspects in the shooting.
Autumn Ridge Apartments has eight apartments per building. According to the resident, the entry doors to each building should be locked, but sometimes they are propped open.
It's unclear if the door to the 221 building was locked when the shooting occurred.
