Cyndi Lauper coming to nTelos pavilion in Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH, Mar 22, 2013 (The Virginian-Pilot - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
In the early '80s when Cyndi Lauper and Madonna first stormed the scene, some critics assumed Lauper would be the bigger star. With her rainbow hair and wardrobe and splashy songs like "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," her peers apparently thought the same. In 1983, Recording Academy members voted Lauper "best new artist" at that year's Grammy Awards.
Although Lauper didn't become the cultural icon of her contemporary Madonna, she has since released work with more integrity.
The singer-songwriter will headline nTelos Wireless Pavilion on Friday, July 5. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday. April 5.
Lately, Lauper has been busy with several projects. The show supports her new album "Memphis Blues." Lauper's autobiography, aptly titled "Memoir," was published in September. And she recently wrote the book for "Kinky Boots," a new Broadway musical.
Lauper's performance at nTelos starts at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.
