DOH-NCR to Parents: Encourage Kids to Regularly Exercise
(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MANILA, Philippines, March 22 -- The Republic of the Philippines issued the following news release:
Regional Nutrition Council Chair and Department of Health - National Capital Region Director Eduardo C. Janairo today called on parents of children aged 5-10 years old to encourage their kids to be physically active and exercise regularly.
"Let us start our children early to value the importance of physical activity like riding bikes, playing tag, or playing ball. It helps keep the balance the body needs in burning the excess fats stored in the body," Director Janairo said.
"We need to developed endurance and strengthen their body for stronger muscles and bones. Having a leaner body helps control body fats and less likely to become overweight. Regular exercise can help our children sleep better and be able to handle physical and emotional challenges at home and in school," Dr. Janairo added.
The statement was made in support of the Association of Nutrition Action Officers - National Capital Region's advocacy walk for overweight and obese pre-school and school children called "Hakbang Para Sa Tamang Timbang."
The latest data from the 2011 Updating Survey on the Nutritional Status of Filipinos conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), 8 in every 100 children aged 0-5 years old are overweight and obese. Metro Manila has the most number of obese and overweight children compared to other regions of the country at 6.2%.
Childhood overweight and obesity are associated with various non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, respiratory illnesses and even cancer.
Janairo advised parents to supervise their children on how they spend their time. "Most kids are leading sedentary lifestyle, and more time in front of the TV, computer, or video-game console, and spending less time exercising. And today's busy families have less free time to prepare nutritious, home-cooked meals. The trend today is fast food and electronics," he stated.
"Preventing children from becoming overweight means providing them with healthy meals and snacks, encouraging daily physical activity and educating them on proper nutrition and weight control. Early awareness of on nutrition and healthy eating habits helps in leading healthy lifestyle practices and away from unnecessary illnesses," Janairo concluded.
