New lithium-ion battery that charges within seconds - News [T-break Tech (Middle East)]

(T-break Tech (Middle East) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) We have all been in this situation: you are out and about, you need your smartphone or laptop to send off a few emails or tweak a presentation you had spent weeks on only to have your boss trash it, and oh no, your battery is out and there is no time to spruce it up. It's a terrible situation to be in. And that's the moment you ask: devices have transformed from big, ugly pieces of disjointed machinery to sleek, super-thin powerhouses but just why hasn't batteries seen the same level of progression Researchers at the University of Illinois have been annoyed by this problem sufficiently enough times to have come up with a whole new type of lithium-ion battery, one that is 2,000 times more powerful and recharges 1,000 times faster. Meaning, not only will these battery power devices for much, much longer, they will recharge within seconds. "This is a whole new way to think about batteries," Lead researcher William P. King said. "A battery can deliver far more power than anybody ever thought. In recent decades, electronics have gotten small. The thinking parts of computers have gotten small. And the battery has lagged far behind. This is a microtechnology that could change all of that. Now the power source is as high-performance as the rest of it." "Any kind of electronic device is limited by the size of the battery – until now," King added. "Consider personal medical devices and implants, where the battery is an enormous brick, and it's connected to itty-bitty electronics and tiny wires. Now the battery is also tiny." This, more than anything else, will leap technology by years if and when this goes mass produce. Via ExtremeTech .
