Christian Social Services chooses new director

Jun 03, 2013 (The Morehead News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Beverly Gilliam has been selected as the new director for Christian Social Services after Kay Stiner retired in April.

Gilliam has retired after working for 30 years for the Rowan County Board of Education, serving as principal of Rodburn Elementary for 17 years.

She said this was one of the hardest decisions she has made.

"It's hard to leave a job that you love, and it is especially difficult to leave the students, parents and faculty and staff that you have built such close relationships with. However, sometimes you just have to do what feels right and what you feel like you're led to do, and that's what I've done," said Gilliam.

"When I saw the ad for the director of Christian Social Services, I was just sort of stopped in my tracks, so to speak. I just couldn't get it off my mind. This is the only job that felt right or that I applied for after looking for three years." Gilliam said she is very excited to continue serving the community she has grown up in and loves.

"Being the new director will allow me to continue to do what I do best, and that is to serve the community that I love. I've always lived in Rowan County, and these are my people. I am a part of them," said Gilliam. "I feel very blessed to have been given this opportunity, and come July 1, when I begin working as the new director, I look forward to jumping in and getting right to work. I am excited and can't wait to start serving the community in this new capacity." Gilliam hopes to bring some new things to CSS, which has a thrift store, a food pantry, provides utility assistance, disaster victim assistance and advocacy referrals.

"We will be doing some facelifts to our facility, upgrading some technologies including the addition of a debit/credit card machine, and increasing the hours of the thrift store, which will give more people the opportunity to shop at the store," said Gilliam. "It is my hope to increase the number and quality of donations and gain more volunteer support. I want to get across that all the donations brought to CSS stay in and help those in Rowan County." Gilliam has been married to her husband, David for 29 years, has two daughters, Bristol and Tessa, and attends the Johnson First Church of God.
