I.D.E.A. Partners Honored by NewSchool of Architecture and Design with Richard Welsh Distinguished Service Award

SAN DIEGO --(Business Wire)--

The NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD) presented the Richard Welsh Distinguished Service Award to I.D.E.A. Partners founders Pete Garcia and David Malmuth during its June 22, 2013 commencement program. Garcia and Malmuth were chosen for their transformative initiatives through I.D.E.A Partners that aim to create over 10,000 design jobs over the next 12 years through the creation of the I.D.E.A. District (Innovation+Design+Education+Arts) in the East Village section of downtown San Diego, where NSAD is located. Garcia and Malmuth are also being recognized for their involvement of NSAD students, faculty and staff in the formation, analysis, community engagement and programming of various components of the District.

"The I.D.E.A. District has galvanized the community around a powerful idea that has the potential to elevate San Diego's urban development to those of Barcelona or Portland, and Garcia and Malmuth have enabled NSAD to play a central role in this bold endeavor," said NSAD President Steve Altman.

Garcia and Malmuth conceived of the I.D.E.A. District as an innovative approach to creating a vibrant jobs cluster at the intersection of design and technology for an area they identified in the Upper East Village comprised of 95 acres on 38 city blocks. To entice creative talent, the District will also be populated with educational institutions, arts and artists and designed as a walkable, sustainable environment.

"The NewSchool of Architecture and Design is an invaluable collaborator in the I.D.E.A. District. Our work is as much community building as it is creating new development. It is the support and perseverance of visionary leaders like those at the school that will make the I.D.E.A. District a reality for San Diego. This is a tremendous honor and a memorable career milestone," said Malmuth.

The I.D.E.A. District concept was first presented to the community in spring 2011. It was quickly embraced by local business and property owners, arts and culture, education, community and government leaders as a blueprint for economic revitalization in the upper East Village. Within the area are multiple schools and universities including, The NewSchool of Architecture and Design, San Diego Ciy College, Thomas Jefferson School of Law, San Diego High School and The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising along with the New Central Library which will house a charter school, E3 Civic High.

"As a more than 40 year resident of San Diego, I believe that we are at a critical moment in time in charting a dynamic new course for the future of our city. We have the opportunity to bring a new energy and vitality to downtown that will ignite growth in creative businesses, arts and education and economic renewal. I am gratified by the recognition and support of the NewSchool for the I.D.E.A. District," said Garcia.

Recently, I.D.E.A. Partners and Lowe Enterprises were selected by the San Diego Community College District for what will be the first project in the District, an urban mixed-use development on a full city block bounded by E, F, Park and 13th Streets. The plan for the 1.37 acre site includes creative office space, apartments designed to appeal to young urban professionals and street level shops and restaurants that will attract residents, employees, and the East Village neighborhood. As currently envisioned, the interior spaces - consisting of an atrium and an open courtyard -- will be active community gathering areas programmed with a variety of events and activities.

The NSAD commencement exercises were held on June 22 for the 2013 graduates of NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD) at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif. Graduating students represented the school's design-related fields of architecture, digital media arts and construction management, and the event marked the first graduating class from the school's Bachelor of Construction Management program.
