Downtown library has rough start since split

Jul 02, 2013 (The Brunswick News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The first day of the Marshes of Glynn Library System in Brunswick didn't run smoothly, mainly because computers weren't running at all. With no Internet or library database available, the Brunswick-Glynn County Library at 208 Gloucester St., Brunswick, was closed all day Monday.

The new Marshes of Glynn system had been expected to be operational by noon Monday after completing some computer programming. But after the system split from the now six-county Three Rivers Library System and Three Rivers moved its headquarters from the Brunswick library Friday, the new library was left without any computer servers because all the servers belonged to Three Rivers.

Computer technicians spent Monday installing new servers at the downtown facility, integrating servers within the library system and updating software, said Lori Lasson, Brunswick-Glynn County Library manager.

Lasson said Monday afternoon she hoped the library could open today at its regular 9:30 a.m. time.

"We may not have public Internet available, but we'll be able to do regular library business like check-in and check-out books," Lasson said.

A sign on the front door of the downtown library Monday informed residents that it was closed, but they could use the St. Simons Island Library branch, which was up and running.

In addition to computer changes, the relocation of the Three Rivers headquarters to Jesup, in Wayne County, required other modifications to be made at the Brunswick library. A new telephone system and new door locks also had to be installed.
