Three city officials run afoul of Broward ethics law

Jul 03, 2013 (Sun Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Three public officials in Broward County failed to get the required ethics training under the new countywide Code of Ethics, the Broward inspector general announced Monday after conducting his first-ever review.

City officials across Broward came under the new ethics regulations in January. The vast majority of them complied with the requirement that they be trained in public ethics.

Inspector General John Scott said his office found that 97 percent of the affected elected officials got the appropriate training.

But three in the tiny village of Lazy Lake -- with 15 homes and a population of 24 -- did not, his office announced.

"The OIG found good cause to believe that three elected officials have failed in their obligation under the Code. Accordingly, we will investigate and determine whether to commence enforcement efforts," he said in a written statement.

Mayor Scott Pringle and council members Tony Millet and Linda Catalano did not comply, according to Scott.

Reached at home, Catalano said, "We have to get that done. We're all in accordance with that, thank you," and hung up the phone.

Mayor Pringle said he and his colleagues "didn't know about it until last month' " and are looking into the cost, but will comply.

Millet could not be reached for comment.
