One week after office fire: Orthodontist to see patients again

Jul 07, 2013 (Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Compton Orthodontics will begin seeing patients Monday, one week after a fire destroyed the dental practice's office.

Several dentists in the community have offered their offices to Compton over the past several days to allow staff members to get in touch with and see patients, Compton office manager Angie Unseld said.

"Our competitors called Dr. (Thomas) Compton the day of the fire and said, 'Whatever you need, we're here to try to help you,' " Unseld said. "Whenever things like this happen, it makes you feel good that people are so kind." Compton's office at New Towne Pike was destroyed early Monday in a fire believed to have been caused by a lightning strike when the office was closed. Unseld said all equipment was lost in the fire, but an outpouring of support from other dental professionals and community members is keeping the practice afloat.

Dr. Scott Barbee opened up his office Wednesday to Compton's staff, Unseld said.

The Downing Rynerson Eye Institute building at 1901 Scottsville Road will serve as the temporary location for Compton Orthodontics for the next 12 to 16 months, but renovation work will have to be done there to accommodate dentists and patients there.

"Our phone number is up and going, our computer system is up and going," Unseld said. "This is a work in progress, and it will be the whole weekend." In the meantime, Compton will be seeing patients this month at other offices in the city.

Compton will see patients Monday through Wednesday this week at Erin and Randy Elliott's office at 120 Callaway Court and on Thursday at Jay Lawless' office at 895 Wilkinson Trace, Unseld said.
