Spain, LatAm nations arrest more than 100 in anti-porn operation
(EFE Ingles Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Madrid, Aug 16 (EFE).- Police in Spain and several Latin American countries joined forces in an operation against the possession and distribution of kiddie porn that led to more than 100 arrests, Spanish authorities said Friday.
Police in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay and Venezuela took part in the operation coordinated by Interpol.
In the first phase of the effort, security forces made 87 searches in these eight Latin American countries and in Spain, taking into custody and charging 78 suspects.
The second phase took place in Argentina, Costa Rica and Spain, with 22 searches that led to an equal number of people being arrested and accused.
The investigations were launched by a special unit of the Chilean police acting against the distribution and possession of child-pornography material over a known file-sharing network.
Once the pornography received from the Latin American Technological Crimes Group was analyzed, authorities located the cybernauts with connections to Internet service providers in Spain.
Besides 14 arrests, authorities in Spain searched 19 homes, seizing more than 100 hard drives, a score of Memory Sticks and almost 1,000 DVDs with child-porn files.
Investigators estimate there could be several thousand files of pedophilic content.
All will be analyzed to determine whether crimes of producing child pornography or sexually abusing minors were committed by any of those involved, and whether connections can be found between these suspects and other pedophiles interacting with them on the Internet. EFE
