Kyocera to supply smartphones to U.S. carrier Verizon
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) OSAKA, Aug. 29 -- (Kyodo) _ Kyocera Corp. has said it will supply U.S. mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless with a model of smartphone.
The Kyoto-based electronics firm said Wednesday the move will expand its share in the U.S. market, where it currently supplies the third-largest carrier Sprint Nextel Corp., which was acquired by Japanese carrier Softbank Corp. in July.
The Hydro Elite smartphones are waterproof for use in rainy conditions and use Kyocera's "Smart Sonic Receiver" technology to deliver call audio through vibrations so calls can be heard clearly in noisy environments.
Through the expansion in the U.S. market and other factors, Kyocera expects to raise its global mobile phone shipments for fiscal 2013 to around 12 million units, up 9 percent from the previous year.
