BRIEF: GE, Smithville announce layoffs in Monroe County [Herald-Times, Bloomington, Ind.]
(Herald-Times (Bloomington, IN) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 09--Two major Bloomington-area employers announced layoffs Monday, with GE Appliances eliminating 160 jobs from its Bloomington production operation and the Ellettsville telecommunications firm Smithville cutting 45 full-time employees.
The move will leave GE Appliances with 364 employees at the Bloomington plant. It comes as demand falls for side-by-side refrigerators, which the plant produces, according to the company. It reported demand for such refrigerators dropping by more than 30 percent since 2010.
About 35 percent of the GE cuts will come from employees taking early retirement, GE predicted. It will offer a layoff benefits package. Laid-off employees' last day will be Oct. 31.
Smithville's 45 job cuts leave the Ellettsville-based firm with more than 140 employees. The cuts are a result of consumers using fewer land line telephones, as well as an expected cut in Federal Communications Commission programs that support fiber-optic network development.
Smithville has installed more than 2,500 miles of fiber in the last four years. The company said in a statement that it expects to see demand for its digital products rise in the future.
