Cumberland Valley approves new superintendent [The Sentinel, Carlisle, Pa.]
(Sentinel, The (Carlisle, PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 10--SILVER SPRING TWP. -- Frederick Withum III has been named superintendent of Cumberland Valley School District.
The Cumberland Valley School Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve Withum at their meeting on Monday. Withum's approval ends the district's search for a superintendent, which began in May with the resignation of William Harner.
"I'm very excited," Withum said. "It is an absolute honor to be appointed as superintendent of one of the finest school districts in the nation."
Withum will begin his tenure on Oct. 1, and said he plans to focus on establishing relationships and trust within the district. He plans to meet parents, teachers and the school board. Withum also plans to get involved as the district looks at comprehensive planning, which he said "will chart the course for the district for the next five years."
Withum also vowed to be interactive with students, student organizations and athletic teams.
"It does not matter if you are only days away from having stepped off that kindergarten bus or months away from walking across the state to get your diploma -- I am here to assist you," Withum said.
Withum was the assistant superintendent at South Middleton School District. He was initially in the running for the superintendent position made available when Pat Sanker left South Middleton, but he took himself out of the running. That position eventually went to Alan Moyer, who was the Hanover Public School District superintendent.
Withum brings with him a 30-year education career in Cumberland County, which started when he was a teacher in the Cumberland Valley School District in 1985.
