OUTSOURCING firm Serco said lawyer Lord Gold will provide independent analysis as a member of the committee set up to identify changes needed in the business following recent scandals over Government contracts. It is facing allegations of fraud over its [pounds]285m prisoner escorting service and has been accused, along with G4S, of overcharging for monitoring offenders. Serco runs the Teesside International Fire Training Centre, at Durham Tees Valley Airport.
Former Sunderland AFC chairman Sir Bob Murray will award five Leeds Metropolitan University accounting and finance undergraduates a [pounds]1,000 scholarship. Sir Bob, who is university chancellor, selected students for the funding which will help towards living costs and university expenses, following an interview and application process.
Production of the distinctive black cab has restarted six months after the London Taxi Company (LTC) was rescued from administration by China's Geely Group. Once fully up and running, LTC's Coventry production line will make about ten taxis a day, five days a week. The first month's expected production has already sold out and the company expects to sell nearly 2,000 vehicles in the next year.
A pub chain has created five North-East jobs.
The Stonegate Pub Company has carried out a [pounds]200,000 refurbishment of its Yates' pub, in Grainger Street, Newcastle, creating the posts in anticipation of increased trade. The three- storey pub is part of Stonegate's portfolio of more than 540 venues, which include Slug and Lettuce and The Living Room pubs and bars.
Lockheed Martin UK has been awarded a major IT services contract at Nato's new headquarters in Brussels. The agreement, which is worth more than [pounds]63m, includes options under which it may also be contracted to maintain the Nato network for five years.
Whitworths, the UK's largest supplier of dried fruit, nut and seed products, has been valued at [pounds]90m under a deal that will see private equity firm Equistone Partners Europe take a majority stake.
Pharmaceutical firm Alliance Pharma posted a 29 per cent rise in pre-tax profits for the six months to June 30 on turnover up four per cent. However, the firm warned its second-half results will not be as strong due to a first-half toxicology seasonal sales boost.
