Copper longevity a mystery for NBN
Sep 15, 2013 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) --
The new Australian Government plans to change the make-up of the national broadband network to a fibre-to-the-node model, with the existing copper lines of Telstra to be used for the final connection to premises. However, the telco is unable to give any clear indication of how much work may be needed to ensure the cabling is able to cope with the bandwidth. The Government estimates that some 71% of all households and businesses connected by NBN Co will rely on the Telstra copper infrastructure. Reported fault rates have risen from 13% in 2006-07 to 18% in 2011-12.
