Penobscot County, Maine Sheriff Glenn Ross Announces First-in-the-Nation Joint Statewide Implementation of BI2 Technologies' Innovative Iris Biometric Identification Technologies
BANGOR, Maine --(Business Wire)--
The founders of BI2 Technologies joined Glenn Ross, Sheriff of Penobscot
County, Maine and officials from the State of Maine Department of
Corrections and other participating Sheriffs' Offices, to announce the
implementation of the first-in-the-nation joint statewide implementation
of BI2 Technologies' innovative iris biometric identification
Sheriff Ross said, "The new biometric technology, called I.R.I.S.™,
enables us to positively identify a previously enrolled offender in
seconds - regardless of where they were originally arrested or enrolled.
The technology works by comparing the unique features contained in the
human iris against a database of other offenders who have been
previously enrolled to positively determine identity in seconds."
Sean G. Mullin, president and CEO of BI2 Technologies said, "We are
honored and pleased to have been selected by the State of Maine
Department of Corrections - and the Sheriffs - to implement our amazing
technolgy across the state."
Peter Y. Flynn, retired Sheriff of Plymouth County, Massachusetts and
co-founder of BI2 Technologies said, "The cooperative effort and
leadership shown by Penobscot County Sheriff Glenn Ross and Commissioner
of the State of Maine Department of Corrections, Joseph Ponte, is truly
remarkable. They have shown exceptional vision by jointly implementing
our unique iris biometric identification technologies across the state
to save money and improve public safety."
Sheriff Ross concluded, "We all realize the difficult challenges law
enforcement and public safety are facing with tight budgets. We are all
working smarter and more cost-effectively. This joint effort is an
excellent example of how we're all trying to do more with less."
In Maine, I.R.I.S.™ was easily integrated with the state's corrections
management system and the jail management systems at each county. BI2
Technologies' I.R.I.S.™ biometric technology is the only national iris
biometric database and network. State and local law enforcement agencies
in 47 states across the nation have implemented the technology since the
company was founded in 2006. In 2012, law enforcement successfully
performed over 12 billion one-to-many identity searches on BI2
Technologies' network with an average match time of 7.8 seconds.
