Pines chiropractor charged with fraud [Sun Sentinel]
(South Florida Sun Sentinel (FL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 17--A Pembroke Pines chiropractor was arrested for illegally soliciting accident victims after obtaining unauthorized media credentials to find people who had been in a car crash, Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater announced Monday.
David Hirschenson, 55, who has a medical office at 233 N. University Dr. in Pembroke Pines, was charged with 19 counts of obtaining illegal crash reports and one count of solicitation.
Hirschenson is accused of hunting for people who had been in crashes and then offering medical services, according to a written statement released by Atwater's office.
Hirschenson did not return a voicemail to a telephone number listed as his. No one answered phone calls throughout the day at his medical office on Monday.
In 1987, Hirschenson who practiced in Davie at the time, received three years probation after pleading guilty in Broward Circuit Court to grand theft for defrauding insurance companies of thousands of dollars. Hirschenson, then 28, was allowed to retain his state chiropractor's license after he agreed to cooperate with a State Attorney's Office's probe.
Atwater said Monday that Hirschenson was one of three South Florida health-care providers arrested as part of a fraud investigation by the Florida Department of Financial Services' Division of Insurance Fraud. A Miami couple, Nester Sanchez and Chakira Vila Puentes, were charged with operating an unlicensed accident clinic and billing more than $353,000 in fraudulent claims.
State investigators have been looking into allegations of abuse of the state's no-fault auto insurance system -- or personal injury protection. PIP covers the first $10,000 worth of medical care and lost wages no matter who is at fault in an accident.
"PIP fraud schemes drive up auto insurance rates for all Floridians, so we must do everything we can do to put a stop to them," Atwater said.
