Bangladesh : AIRTEL BANGLADESH to invest $50m to roll out 3G network [TendersInfo (India)]
(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Bangladesh Chris Tobit has announced that the mobile operator will spend up to $50 million in the coming three years to roll out its 3G network.
Recently, the operator has inked an agreement with Chinese telecom vendor Huawei to set up 3G equipment. According to Tobit, the firm has already spent $125 million for 3G spectrum purchase and to pay other relevant charges with VAT.
The firm has acquired 5 megahertz of spectrum in an auction on September 8 to roll out 3G services. According to Tobit, Airtel has already covered 80 percent population and nearly 75 percent area of the country with a solid foundation for its voice network in the previous two years.
3G is not just the access to mobile broadband, it has a cascading role in the economy through e-health, e-agriculture, e-education and employment, he said.
Airtel has developed 3G network in nearly 15 countries, comprising India, Sri Lanka and a few African countries.
